I usually do not in lower levels, but in the middle school and high school ranks I will carry a clicker in the pocket. I try to be as discrete as possible to keep from looking like I'm playing pocket pool on the bases. I've seen some BU's keep it in their hands throughout. Whatever is comfortable. But the last resort is to just call time and check the home books. It's a reminder that we are all human. Now, if it becomes a habit or multiple occurances in the same game, well - maybe you should have had a V-8! :)
IMO. I think every umpire should use an INDICATOR in all games, usually in the left hand, it saves a lot of headaches, I agree with you that you should not stand there playing with it and looking at it, try keeping it as unoticeable as you can, college and above usually don't use them as much. gene k
This is one of two reasons why I do not understand the base ump not having an indicator. The other is that having one is one more way to keep the base ump "in the game". What's the rationale against it? That he might drop it during a play? In any case, it seems to me the pro's outweight the con's.
