If you are interested in becoming a baseball official for the Huntsville / Madison County area, you have come to the right place.

Below is some information and commonly asked questions regarding our association.

  • Dues:  To become a registered official with the State of Alabama you must attend regular meetings with an association, you must take and pass a registration test, and you must pay the $40.00 dues to the State.

  • A rules book, Case book, and umpire mechanics manual is provided at the meetings.

  • Our association has dues also, but they are broken down so it's not a burden on new officials.  These aren't much and are set each year.

  • We have training every Sunday night during the season for all members.  Our meetings usually last 1 to 1.5 hours.

  • We officiate Middle School, Freshman, Junior Varsity, and Varsity baseball for all the High Schools in Madison County and most of the middle schools too.

  • Most new officials will start at the middle school level and based on your skills, will advance accordingly.

  • You are required to purchase your uniforms and equipment.  Just about every year, the officials that have been around purchase new equipment and will usually sell their old gear to the new officials at a very good price.

  • List of Equipment:

    • AHSAA fitted Cap (prefer two , one for the plate and one for the bases, but one will get you started)

    • Two navy ball bags

    • Navy pullover uniform jersey with your official number (assigned by the Secretary), and a state patch (received upon passing the test)

    • Grey, Fecheimer or Cliff Kleen officials paints

    • Mostly black shoes

    • Umpire Mask or helmet

    • Chest protector

    • Ball - Strike indicator

    • Plate Brush

    • Shin Guards

    • Plate Shoes (optional but recommended)

    • Navy jacket (the jacket has been selected by the State office)

  • Games usually start between 3:30 and 4:00 for Middle School, Freshman and JV.  Varsity games with either start at 4:00-5:00 or 7:00 with the JV game being played before or after.

  • Most games we officiate are the 2 man umpire system but some games are done with the 3 man system.  All playoff games are done with the 3 man system.

  • Some baseball experience is helpful but not necessary.  Our training sessions are geared towards new and experienced officials.

We hope this helps you.  If you have any other questions, please feel free to send us a message
